What is a round-based zombie game?

A round-based zombie game is a co-op survival shooter with no win screen. The horde comes in rounds. Clear one, catch your breath, and the next round arrives bigger and tougher. Your score is simply the round you reached before the whole squad went down.

The hook is the economy. Every kill pays points, the only currency, and you choose: a better gun now, a perk that lasts the whole run, or a gamble on the mystery box.

Most free zombie games in the browser are top-down or 2D. xFPS Zombies is a full first-person shooter with the same movement and gunplay as the rest of the game (sprint, slide, mantle, aim down sights) on the same maps as the PvP modes, played at night.

How a zombies run works in xFPS

Choose Zombies on the Play screen, pick a squad size and hit play. You spawn with a pistol and a knife and round 1 starts. The first rounds are gentle on purpose: round 1 solo sends six walkers, and early on a single pistol headshot or one knife stab drops one. By round 10 that is 20 zombies a round, and every walker has three times the health.

The horde is not one zombie copied a hundred times. Walkers are the base. Sprinters close distance fast, brutes soak damage and hit hard, and from round 4 some zombies spawn as Jumpers, a tougher, quicker variant that pays more points.

How points work

A kill pays 100 points, and a headshot kill pays 150. Sprinters pay a little more (120) and brutes 250. The boss pays 2,000. Points belong to you, not the squad, so in co-op everyone runs their own budget.

The 20-second break and the Store

When a round is cleared you get a 20-second break, with the countdown on screen. That is your shopping window. Press B on desktop, or the Store button on a touchscreen, to open the Store. Wall weapons and ammo can also be bought mid-round at their markers with interact (F by default).

Clearing a round tops up your ammo by at most two magazines of the gun in your hands. A full refill is the Ammo wall buy, a full-ammo power-up or a pickup from a fallen zombie.

Hound rounds and boss rounds

Every fifth round that is not a boss round (5, 15, 25 and so on) is a hound round: fast dogs that arrive in packs instead of the usual horde. They are frailer than walkers, but they come from several directions at once. The last dog of the round always drops a full-ammo power-up.

Every tenth round (10, 20, 30 and so on) is a boss round. A half-size horde comes first, then a huge boss walks in once you have thinned it out. It is slow, immune to the one-hit-kill power-up, and slams the ground: a ring shows the 4-meter danger area for one second first, and anyone still inside gets hit and knocked away. The boss drops a full-ammo power-up at two-thirds and one-third health, and on death drops either a free perk or another full-ammo power-up.

Easy, Medium or Hard

Public Quick Play always runs on Medium. In a private room the host can pick Easy, Medium or Hard before the run starts, and offline you choose it in match setup. Easy zombies have about two-thirds of the health, hit softer and move slower. Hard zombies have two and a half times the health and hit harder.

Wall weapons

Wall buys are the backbone of a run: guaranteed, cheap and open mid-round. The shotgun is brutal up close and useless at range, which is exactly what you want when you are cornered. The wall sniper is the sleeper pick: a sniper headshot kills any normal zombie outright through round 50, brutes included. It does not work on the boss.

Walk up to a wall-buy marker and hold interact. Wall weapons and ammo can be bought even while a round is running.

The mystery box and the weapon upgrade

The mystery box opens from round 2 and costs 950 a spin. It can hand you anything from a basic pistol to an LMG or a box-only wonder weapon that pierces through several zombies. It can also give you something worse than what you hold, so spin when you can afford a miss.

The weapon upgrade costs 5,000 and upgrades the gun in your hands once: triple damage and a 50% bigger magazine and reserve. Late in a run, an upgraded gun is what lets your damage keep up with zombie health.

Perks

Perks last the whole run and stack. There are six: one adds a 50-point health pool, one speeds up reloads by 25%, one raises fire rate by 30%, one adds 10% sprint speed, one tightens your aim-down-sights spread and doubles the headshot bonus, and one makes your revives twice as fast and starts health regen sooner. That last one costs only 500 when you have teammates, and solo it also gives you back a self-revive.

Armour, turrets and barricades

Armour absorbs hits before your health. A sentry gun or rocket turret fights for you from wherever you place it, and a barricade blocks a gap. Two things to know: hounds ignore your turrets and run straight for you, and the boss hunts nearby turrets first, and its slam wrecks them.

Power-ups

Sprinters, brutes and Jumpers sometimes drop a power-up. Ordinary walkers never do. Double points and one-hit kills last 30 seconds. The full-ammo power-up refills everyone, a bomb power-up kills the zombies on the field (a boss only loses a slice) and pays 400, another rebuilds your barricades, a box sale drops a box spin to 10 points for 30 seconds, and bonus points pay the squad.

How to play zombies online with friends

Yes, you can play zombies online with friends, and there are two ways to do it.

Quick Play: Solo, Duo, Trio or Quad

On the Play screen, pick Zombies and a squad size: Solo, Duo, Trio or Quad, for one to four survivors. Use Invite friend beside your player on Home to pull friends into a party, then the party leader queues. A Duo, Trio or Quad queue waits about 15 seconds for other players, then AI survivors take any empty places. So you always get a full squad, even at 3 a.m.

One rule to know: nobody can join a run after it starts. Get your whole group in before you queue.

Private room with an invite code

Create a custom match, set the mode to Zombies, and share the room's invite link or code. Friends open the link, or use Join with code under Browse lobbies. The host can also pick the difficulty here. The how-to-play guide walks through the lobby step by step.

Reviving teammates

When a teammate goes down, get close and hold interact for about four seconds to pick them up. They come back with 50 health. You also start every run with one self-revive: hold the same control while downed. A downed survivor has 60 seconds to be revived while anyone can still help. Once no one can, that drops to four seconds. When every survivor is down, the run is over.

The horde scales with your squad. With two survivors a round has about 1.55 times as many zombies, and with four about 2.55 times, plus more health and harder hits. More friends means more guns, but also more zombies.

Highest round tips: how to survive longer

  1. Go for headshots early. A headshot is worth 150 points instead of 100. In the first rounds, every zombie you drop with one shot to the head is a 50% bonus toward your first wall gun and perk.
  2. Never stand still in a corner. No zombie in the horde is faster than your sprint, and a regular zombie needs three hits to down you from full health. Moving in loops around the horde is safer than holding a dead end.
  3. Use the full 20-second break. Walk to a marker for ammo or a wall gun, open the Store, then place what you bought. Your health regenerates meanwhile.
  4. Buy armour and the health perk before round 10. They stack: hits go to armour first, then the perk's extra pool, then your health.
  5. Get a wall sniper for headshots. One-shot headshots on every normal zombie through round 50 make it a great second gun for brutes and Jumpers.
  6. Get out of the boss's ring. The slam always shows its 4-meter ring for one second first. Sprint out, then punish it. The one-hit-kill power-up does nothing to it, so save your good ammo.
  7. Hound rounds: put your back to a wall. Dogs ignore turrets, so your sentries will not bail you out. Watch for packs coming from more than one direction and count on the last dog's full-ammo drop. Grab drops quickly: a power-up fades after 30 seconds.
  8. Save the weapon upgrade for a gun you trust. At 5,000 points it is your biggest buy, and it upgrades the gun in your hands only once. Use it on your main weapon, not on a box roll you may swap away.

Zombie game online free: FAQ

Is there a free zombie game online with no download?

Yes. xFPS Zombies is free and runs in your browser, so there is nothing to install. You can play as a guest; signing in only adds saved account progress.

Can you play zombies online with friends?

Yes. Invite friends into a party from Home and queue Duo, Trio or Quad together, or create a custom match and share its invite link or code. Up to four survivors play one run, and AI teammates fill any empty places.

How many players can play zombies together?

One to four. Pick Solo, Duo, Trio or Quad. The horde gets bigger with every survivor: a Quad round spawns about 2.5 times as many zombies as the same round solo.

Does the zombie game work on phones and touchscreens?

Yes. On touchscreens the Store opens from an on-screen Store button instead of the B key, and the rest of the run plays the same way.

Is there a highest round leaderboard?

Yes. Online runs post the round you reached to the Highest wave board, which the server records itself. You can filter it by squad size and difficulty for today or all time. Offline runs are not posted.

Is this Call of Duty Zombies?

No. xFPS is an independent game, not affiliated with Activision; its zombies mode is round-based in the same spirit, with its own maps, rules and balance.
