Prop Hunt Tips and Tricks: How to Win as a Hider and a Hunter

The best Prop Hunt tips come down to three things: hide where a prop would really stand, control your noise, and as a hunter, never waste a shot. This guide turns the exact rules of xFPS Prop Hunt into tactics you can use in your next round. New to the mode? Start with how Prop Hunt online works, then come back here.

The numbers every tip is built on

Good Prop Hunt players play the clock and the rules, not just the map. These are the values that matter most in xFPS:

Automatic tauntEvery 25 s (20 s with 2–3 players), every 12 s in the last 30 s, every 8 s during a Hardcore escape

Hunter energy100 max; miss −20, hit −3, refills 8 per second
Transform range and cooldownAbout 5 m, 1 s

Prop Hunt hiding tips

Use all 25 seconds, not the first spot you see

Hunters cannot move or see anything during hiding time, so this is the only moment you can travel without being watched. Everyone starts as a crate. Get away from the start, pick a district corner the hunters will reach late, and transform once you get there. A standard prop moves a little faster than a walking hunter, so you have time.

Copy what the area already has

Every round deals a fresh set of props that fit the map’s theme, and each form has at least three identical twins spread through the district. Your disguise uses the same model as the scenery, with no outline or name tag. So the question is never “what is the best prop?” but “what would stand here?” Copy a prop from the area you plan to hide in, not one you saw across the map.

Stand where a prop would stand

Look at how the real props around you are placed and copy that: along a wall, tucked beside cover. A tire stack standing alone in the middle of a walkway is the first thing a hunter shoots.

Match the angle, then lock

Rotate in 45-degree steps (Q and R by default) until your prop sits square to the wall like its neighbors, then press Lock (V) so a nudge cannot turn you. Lock only works on the ground, so do not try it mid-jump or on a slope edge. Hiders play in third person, so swing the camera around and check how you sit from the side before you settle.

Big props: great cover, terrible escape

A sofa, vending machine or giant duck can look perfect in the right room, but big forms move at roughly half speed, cannot jump and stop at doorways where the whole object does not fit. Pick one only for a spot you never intend to leave. If a hunter finds you, you will not outrun them.

Do not take long drops

Falls of more than about 6.5 metres hurt, and the damage comes off your prop’s health. Transforming does not heal you. Land hurt and the hunter needs fewer hits; take a big enough fall and you are caught on the spot with no hunter in sight.

When you get hit, move

The hunter sees a HIDER HIT marker, so your disguise is blown. Staying locked means two more shots and you are out. Unlock, break line of sight, and transform into a different prop beside its twins somewhere else. You can transform any time as long as you can see an eligible prop within reach.

Best hiding spots: what makes a spot good

Spots that work every round share the same traits, on every one of the Prop Hunt maps:

  • Plausible. Your prop type already appears nearby, and you are against a wall or beside cover.
  • Off the route. Hunters sweep doorways and main lanes first. A side room or the far end of a container row buys you time.
  • Two ways out. A dead-end corner is great until you take a hit. Then it is a trap.
  • Hard to stand next to. If a hunter has to climb or squeeze past to check you, they will probably check the easy props first.

One warning: the spots change less than the props do. Positions where props can stand are fixed for each map, while the props on them are reshuffled every round. Experienced hunters learn those positions, so a gnome in a spot where no prop has ever stood is a giveaway.

Tips for 1v1 Prop Hunt with a friend

With two or three players you play one of five compact areas (Cargo, Close Q., Suburb, Frontier or Gun House), the hunt is 105 seconds and automatic taunts come every 20 seconds. With two players there is one hider, so a single catch ends the round. Every taunt matters more, and running after a hit matters most.

Taunt tips: how not to give yourself away

Watch the countdown on your HUD

Your HUD counts down to the next automatic taunt and warns you in the final five seconds. The timer only starts when the hunt does, so the first automatic taunt comes 25 seconds into the hunt (20 in small games). It speeds up to every 12 seconds in the last 30 seconds, so expect a busy finish.

The sound stays where you were

A taunt plays at the spot where you stood when it fired. It does not follow you. If a hunter is closing in and a taunt is due, let it go off, then relocate: they will search the spot you just left.

Manual taunts: cheap points, real risk

Press T (12-second cooldown) and the first three taunts each round pay 5 points each. A manual taunt does not push back the automatic one, so every manual taunt is an extra clue. Taunt only when no hunter is near, or right after an automatic taunt from the same spot, when you have nothing new to give away.

Hunter tips: how to find props

Plan your sweep during the blackout

You are blind for 25 seconds, but you know the map. Decide your first route before the screen opens: the corners furthest from the hider start, then the side rooms. If there are several hunters, split up.

Learn the spots, not the props

Prop positions are fixed per map; only the forms on them change each round. After a few games you will know where props belong. Anything standing somewhere new, in the middle of a lane or at an odd angle to its wall, deserves a bullet.

Look for movement

Hiders who are still settling in, or who ran after a hit, give themselves away by moving. Stop, look over a room, and watch for anything that shifts or turns.

Spend energy like ammo is limited

Your magazine reloads forever, but energy does not. Five misses empty a full bar, and it takes 2.5 seconds to earn back one shot. Hits cost only 3, so once you land one, keep firing: two more hits catch the hider. If you are out of energy, stop shooting and reposition while it refills.

One of these props is in a spot no prop normally uses. Check placement first, then spend the 20 energy.

Walk to the last taunt, then widen

A taunt marks where the hider was, not where they are. Go to that spot, check the props there, then sweep outward along the routes they could have taken. Near the end of the hunt, taunts arrive every 12 seconds, which makes it much easier to pin down a hider who keeps moving.

Converted hunters: spread out

Caught players join your side after three seconds. Do not follow each other around. Cover different rooms, because every hider left is a round lost if the timer runs out.

Hardcore tips: winning the escape

In Hardcore, surviving the hunt only gets you to the escape. One random exit opens for 25 seconds, with a cyan EXIT beacon and an on-screen arrow and distance. You escape by staying on the ground inside the zone for three seconds; jumping or stepping out resets it.

  • Hiders: hide central. The exit is picked at random from several locations each round, so you cannot count on one. A spot in the middle of the district keeps every exit within reach.
  • Hiders: avoid big props. Half speed and no jumping turns a 25-second window into a long walk. Switch to a standard prop before the hunt ends.
  • Hiders: unlock in time. A locked prop cannot move. Unlock as the hunt timer runs out so you can go the moment the beacon appears.
  • Hunters: guard the zone. You see the same beacon. Automatic taunts fire every 8 seconds during the escape, so listen for moving hiders and stand where they must enter.

One escape wins the round for the hiders, but the others can still escape for their own 150 points before the exit closes.

How to win Prop Hunt on points

The match goes to the highest personal score across all rounds, not to the side with the most round wins. That changes how you should play:

  • Catches as a starting hunter are worth 100; after you have been caught they are worth 50. Your rounds as the original hunter are your big scoring chance.
  • Surviving a Classic hunt is worth 150, more than a single catch. Playing it safe as a hider is usually right.
  • In Hardcore, surviving is worth 25 and escaping 150. The escape is where the points are.
  • Taunts are worth 15 at most per round. Never risk a 150-point survival for them.

Roles rotate so that everyone starts as hunter in turn. For the full rules, modes and how to set up a match with friends, see Prop Hunt online: rules and how to play or the xFPS How to play guide.

Prop Hunt tips: FAQ

How do you win Prop Hunt?

Rounds are won by sides, but the match goes to the highest personal score. As a hider, surviving a Classic hunt is worth 150 points; as a starting hunter, each catch is worth 100. Survive your hiding rounds and make your early catches count.

How do you find props in Prop Hunt?

Look for an object standing where no prop normally stands, a prop that moves or sits at an odd angle, and walk to where you heard the last taunt. Only fire when you are fairly sure, because a miss costs 20 of your 100 energy.

What are the best hiding spots in Prop Hunt?

The best spot is one where your prop would naturally stand: against a wall or a piece of cover, near identical props, away from the main walking routes, with a second way out if you get hit.

How do you lock rotation in Prop Hunt?

Press V by default, or tap Lock on a phone. Lock freezes both your position and your rotation, and it only works while you stand on the ground. Press it again to unlock and move.

How do you taunt in Prop Hunt?

Press T by default, or tap Taunt on a phone. A manual taunt has a 12-second cooldown and the first three each round give 5 points. Automatic taunts still happen on their own timer whether you taunt or not.
