How to play hide and seek online

  1. Open Classic Hide ’n Seek in xFPS. You can continue as a guest.
  2. From the normal Play screen, use Change game → Hide & Seek → Choose modes.
  3. Keep Classic Hide ’n Seek selected. Deselect the Prop Hunt variants if you only want human hiding, then save your selection.
  4. Press Find Match. You’ll join a suitable public room or wait for another person. When play begins, follow your role and the timer on screen.

Public rooms hold up to 12 players and play three rounds. There is no bot fill, so an empty queue will not start a solo match. If you want to play immediately with someone you know, create a room and invite a friend.

Hiding, seeking and winning a round

This is a shooter-style version of the playground game: seekers catch hiders with a pistol hit. Hiders have no disguise to select, and a chase is not your fallback once the search begins.

First, find cover

Hiders have 40 seconds to move, jump or crouch into a spot while seekers wait without seeing the map. Get behind cover before the timer ends. Your position and stance then freeze, so a crouched hiding spot stays crouched. You can still look around.

Then the seekers search

The hunt lasts 150 seconds with two players, or 180 seconds with three or more. One pistol hit catches a hider. Caught players join the seekers, so being found gives you a new job instead of leaving you watching for the rest of the round.

There are no automatic taunts to reveal a hiding spot. A hider can choose to taunt, but the sound can help a seeker find them. Seekers need to look carefully rather than wait for a compulsory clue.

How the round ends

Hiders win the round if at least one remains uncaught when the hunt ends. Seekers win by catching everyone. Roles rotate between rounds, giving players turns on both sides. Round victories and individual standings are separate: the match standings use personal points earned across the rounds.

Play hide and seek online with friends

For a private game, each person opens xFPS on their own device. One player creates the room:

  1. On Play, choose Create custom match.
  2. Open Match settings and choose Classic Hide ’n Seek. Pick an available map and the number of rounds.
  3. Share the room’s invite link or code. Friends can open the link, or use Browse lobbies → Join with code.
  4. With at least two people in the room, the host presses Start preparation. Players ready up to begin.

Keep the room invite-only if you want just your group. After the match, you return to the same lobby and can change the map without sending a new invitation. Custom matches do not award XP or saved progression.

With two players, one hides and one seeks. With more people, caught hiders help search for those still hidden. Let a friend discover your spot rather than announcing it as soon as they pass you.

Tips for hiders and seekers

Choose a spot you can reach before the freeze

A distant corner is only useful if you arrive in time. Spend the last few seconds checking your stance and the open angles around you. A wall can hide you from one approach while leaving you visible from a doorway on the other side.

Use cover that hides your whole silhouette

You are still a human character. Think about where a seeker will stand and whether they can see your head or shoulders. Crouching behind low cover can help; standing beside a crate will not turn you into one.

Search one area at a time

As a seeker, check both sides of cover and look through doorways from more than one angle. Repeatedly circling the same open space leaves the edges unchecked. With another seeker, split the remaining area so you do not both search the same corner.

Choose your noise

Silence is allowed. A voluntary taunt can make a close encounter funny, but it gives away information you did not have to share. Save it for a risk you actually want to take.

Classic Hide ’n Seek or Prop Hunt?

The Hide & Seek menu contains six online variants: four ways to hide as a human and two Prop Hunt modes. Choose the one that matches how you want to hide:

  • Classic Hide ’n Seek: remain human, find cover, then freeze. Taunts are voluntary and one pistol hit catches you.
  • Classic Hide ’n Seek · Move freely: the same 40 seconds to hide, but you keep moving during the hunt, and hunters can hear your footsteps.
  • Scary Hide ’n Seek (Freeze or Move freely): hide in the dark while the seeker searches with a flashlight, with brief scares along the way. Reduce scares in the video settings turns the apparitions off.
  • Classic Prop Hunt: turn into an object from the map, blend in with the scenery and survive the hunt. Automatic taunts give hunters clues.
  • Hardcore Prop Hunt: use object disguises, then reach an exit during the escape phase to win.

All six need human players online. If object disguises sound more like your kind of game, read the Prop Hunt online guide. For the rest of the controls and game modes, see how to play xFPS.

Questions before you play

Can I play hide and seek online for free?

Yes. Classic Hide ’n Seek in xFPS is free to play in your browser. You can play as a guest without creating an account, and there is no game installation.

Can I play hide and seek with just one friend?

Yes. Two human players are enough: one hides and one seeks. Public Quick Play rooms hold up to 12 players, and roles rotate between rounds.

Is Classic Hide ’n Seek the same as Prop Hunt?

No. In Classic Hide ’n Seek you remain human, find cover and freeze when hiding time ends. In Prop Hunt you disguise yourself as an object. Both are under Hide & Seek on the Play screen.

Can I play solo or with bots?

No. Classic Hide ’n Seek requires at least two human players online. It is not included in the bots-only Offline Edition. A public room waits for another person rather than filling with bots.

Can I move after the hiding phase?

As a hider, your position and stance freeze when the 40-second hiding phase ends. You can still look around and choose to taunt, but you cannot run to a new spot.

Does it work on a phone?

xFPS has touch controls for phones and tablets. Use landscape orientation for more space, move and crouch during hiding time, then look around while frozen. Seekers use the touch aim and fire controls.
